UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I have a NAS server that needs to have the share mounted on a unix server. I am not that familiar with NFS mounts....any help on what I have to do on the UNIX box...thanks!

You should have on your unix box nfs client running...
Then all you do is mount the nfs-filsystem
mount <options may be required depending OS> <Host>:/<exported FS/dir> /<mount-point>

Once you've determined that the file system can be mounted, you'll likely wish to update /etc/vfstab or /etc/fstab (depending on OS) to include the mount request for this volume. This will ensure that the volume is mounted on reboot.

If you wish to use automount (or something similar) to manage mounting, you'll need to update a handful of files (like /etc/auto_master, /etc/auto_<dirtree>) to ensure that when you cd into the expected directory, the file system will be mounted for you.

so I created a directory /share

When I do the following command I get an error

mount hostname:/directory /share

nfs mount: mount:/share: Not owner

I am logged in as superuser so not sure why, any suggestions?

Who is the owner server side? (your NAS that is...)
NFS can be tricky for to avoid security issues by default root cannot access the FS (but can mount!)...

If your NFS server is Solaris:

grep <share> /etc/dfs/sharetab
showmount -e | grep <share>
ls -dl <share>

If your NFS server is HPUX:

grep <share> /etc/xtab
showmount -e localhost | grep <share>
ls -dl <share>    #(I haven't tried this one - might be different ls options)

Other OSes have similar commands to get the information from the host about what is being shared

Then, on the client, show us the result of

The NAS server is accessed via a program called RAIDar which is used on the Windows side.
