Question HELP! The '/var/adm/message' file increase every few seconds???

Hi, guys, I have a big problem.

I've got a sun solaris 4.1.4 workstation, and the /var/adm/message file will add one row every few seconds. It becomes a large file in a short time.

I wander if there are some mistakes configuring the workstation.

the /var/adm/message is as follow:

¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡
Sep 16 11:09:43 a580_2_s bootpd[3060]: bootp: BOOTP starting
Sep 16 11:09:43 a580_2_s bootpd[3060]: bootp: (re)reading /etc/bootptab
Sep 16 11:09:44 a580_2_s bootpd[3061]: bootp: BOOTP starting
Sep 16 11:09:44 a580_2_s bootpd[3061]: bootp: (re)reading /etc/bootptab
Sep 16 11:09:45 a580_2_s bootpd[3062]: bootp: BOOTP starting
Sep 16 11:09:45 a580_2_s bootpd[3062]: bootp: (re)reading /etc/bootptab
Sep 16 11:09:54 a580_2_s bootpd[3063]: bootp: BOOTP starting

THANK U VERY MUCH.

First, I would do a ps -aef |grep bootpd to see how the command is running. Next, to keep the file from growing, I believe you can send the output to /dev/null by linking the file there, as follows.

ln -s /var/adm/messages /dev/null

When you eventually fix the problem, then remove the link.

Now, I would read the man page for bootpd. It will tell you a great deal.

I wouldn't necessarily do this step, but you can to stop the messages. Next, if you choose to you can edit the /etc/inetd.conf file and comment out the line for that. Also, in /etc/services.

OR you can kill and restart the bootpd daemon if you need it to be running.

ps -aef |grep bootpd |grep -v grep
kill PID # for bootpd

/usr/lbin/bootpd -s

Try these steps and get back... Smilie

I know that some syslogds will freak out it you remove the file it's writing to, unless you stop/start the daemon. Besides, I wouldn't junk the messages file - it's obviously telling you there's a problem, although most likely with configuration...

I only told them to do that just so it won't max out the filesystem.

I would also like to know what changed and when the problem began in relation to anything that changed.
