Windows to UNIX FTP

Good Morning,

I am currently having a setup of running a batch file in windows to ftp certain files to unix and after that one i login to a unix box to manually run a script to clean up those files and combine them into one and get go back to windows to run another batch of file to get the result from the unix box.

Question:

Is there a way to run unix scripts via batch file in windows? wherein i do not have to login to the unix box at all.

Thank you.Smilie

It sounds like you need the script to run on the Unix box. You don't say what the interval might be though.

Windows - you ftp files to Unix box

Unix - Every 5 minutes, check the directory for any files, if any file exists, run the second script which does the cleanup and deletes the old files.

Windows - Every 5 minutes, try to ftp the file back from the Unix box. If it exists, process it.

Hi carl thanks for the reply this is actually one of the work around i have in mind unfortunately the timing is not constant.

This is my current process:

1) FTP files from windows to unix

This is the ftp batch file(sample) in windows that i have

open <unix_box_ip>
user <username> <password>
cd /home/<username>/dump/
mput <file>*
bye

2) after this is done i log-in to my unix box and under /home/<username> i have a script there name script1 (script1 cleans up and appends all content of all file* to one file name fileout) which I could trigger manually by just typing it as the permission of the file is already 777.

the script would actually copy the cleanup file (fileout) to another directory under /home/<username>/cleanupfile.

3) and i have another batch file would get that cleanup file.

open <unix_box_ip>
user <username> <password>
cd /home/<username>/cleanupfile/
mget <fileout>*
bye

....

I try modifying the batch file in the first step to look like this

open <unix_box_ip>
user <username> <password>
cd /home/<username>/dump/
mput <file>*
cd /home/<username>
script1
cd /home/<username>/cleanupfile
mget <fileout>*
bye

but the script1 is running at all. Smilie

The script won't run under the ftp process so that resolves that right there.

Are you using ssh to log in to the Unix box? If so, you could do something like this:

Code:
scp file.* username@unix:/home/username/dump
ssh username@unix "/home/username/script1"
scp username@unix:/home/username/fileout .

Alternately, if ssh isn't available for some reason, on the Unix box, have the user set up a cron entry (I don't know if it's Linux or not):

Code:
* * * * * /home/username/testscript > /dev/null 2>&1

testscript would consist of just:

Code:
#!/bin/ksh

if [[ -f /home/username/dump/file.* ]]
then
  /home/username/script1
fi

That way it runs every minute and only runs the main script when files appear in the dump directory. The script1 script should clean up the dump directory so the testscript only runs when you copy files over.

Thanks for the reply again carl. Yes i am using ssh to login to the box....I'll try the the scripts that you have given me and would get back as soon as I have updates.

Thank you again
