Sun Ultra 80 ...
had to connect an additional drive. connect it according to hardware manual
The problem is when i try to power on the system , it dosent start, .. like the system is dead.
So i remove the new drive and voila ... power starts up .

Can anyone pinpoint wats goin on here.

Why is it that power fails to light up these beauties... when this drive is connected..

What type of drive is the 'new' drive?
How many drives do you have when it does boot?

Assuming it is a SCSI drive, the first thing that comes to mind are the SCSI terminators. Getting the termination right on SCSI devices can be difficult and when they are wrong, very unpredictable things happen, including crashes and system lockups.

Drive is a fujitsu 18 GB - #5404177 ... out of the box

I already have a seagate drive connected to it ... thats when it works

When i connect this new drive to the existing config .. power does not start up ..

Amazing thing is I do not find any jumper setting on the drive. so that i can check the SCSI ID..

Well... if SCSI, you have to make a little table of the SCSI IDs and you must map out the terminations.

Only the ends of the SCSI bus can have have terminations, and they MUST be terminated. All devices between the host adapter (one end, in a typical configuration) and the last device (your final drive, assuming only drives) MUST be unterminated.

I agree that scsi id will cause problems - but I've never seen it keep a system powered off.

I was searching for the part number you posted. I noticed on SUN's handbook web page that there are a couple of different Fujitsu 18GB drives - I wonder if the voltage option could be part of the problem. (See Ultra80 components )

The last one is differential low-voltage while the first two are single-ended scsi.

I had a problem with a SCSI Fujitsu drive. It was locking up a Microsoft 2000 advanced server. The only way I got it working, is by having it pre-partitioned & formatted on a test bed.
