There is a large FAQ thread on books:
https://www.unix.com/new-to-unix-which-books-should-i-read-/137-unix-books.html?s=

I would like to add that just about anything published by O'Reilly is great - the "Learning the Bash Shell" and "Learning the Korn Shell" books are both great, and although similar, I would stick with the Korn shell book (I recently switched from writing bash scripts to ksh only).
O'Brein and Pitt's "Korn Shell Programming by Example" is a very decent book as well.

Hope this helps!

Books

I have just started to learn scripting myself, and I was told Unix Shells by Example was a good book. It is by Ellie Quigley. It covers all the different shells plus awk, sed and grep ( right off the cover) Hope this helps or just gives you more choices.

scripting books

I second the motion on scripting how to books for the Quigley book. I bought this and thought at first that I spent a lot of money for only being able to use a tiny part of the book, but since have revised my opinion. IT is very useful in learning
scripts, my main interest was for the section on korn shell, but it is a great book for beginners. good luck.

Hey, thanks for everyones input. I really do appreciate it.

I've been trying to do some research on some good books to help me learn scripting.

Background at the moment is that I use Linux and *BSD as my main operating systems, with Windows 2000 in the background. I'd like to further increase my skills in Linux and *BSD as well as venture into Solaris.

I'm new to scripting, so i'm still trying to learn just exactly what would be most beneficial for me to learn, both personally and professionally.

Here are a list of some books i've found that sound promising:

UNIX System Administration Handbook (3rd Edition) by Evi Nemeth

UNIX Shell Programming, Revised Edition by Stephen G. Kochan, Patrick H. Wood

The Korn Shell: Linux and Unix Shell Programming Manual (3rd Edition) by Anatole Olczak

UNIX Network Programming by W. Richard Stevens
UNIX Network Programming, Volume 2: Interprocess Communications (2nd Edition) by W. Richard Stevens

Programming Perl (3rd Edition) by Larry Wall

Perl Cookbook by Tom Christiansen

Linux and Unix Shell Programming by David Tansley

Learning Perl (3rd Edition) by Randal L. Schwartz

Learning the Bash Shell (Nutshell Handbooks) by Cameron Newham, Bill Rosenblatt

Quite a list eh? Ya, I love books. Just need to pick one at this time to get me started.

Any suggestions on a book to help me learn scripting/shell programming? Just to restate, i'm new to scripting and shell programming.

Thanks everyone!

Tarballed

PS. Feel free to suggest other books. ANything to help me build my skills. Smilie
