What does a bold filename in ls mean?

I am ssh'd into my box using a terminal emulation of vt100. When I do a directory listing (ls) some of the file names are bold. I know that directories are also in bold, but these are not directories. What does a bolded filename mean?

This seems like such a basic question, but I've spent 20 minutes googling the web and this forum to no avail. Thanks for the help.

Is it bold or another color?

I know on my centos box directorys are different color, executables are different and linked files are different.

when you list it, Directory always comes in BOLD. nothing else.

While I can change the actual colors on my terminal emulation, the setting name is "bold". I can't see any pattern to which files are bold vs which are not bold. They're definitely not directories and the difference is not due to being executables vs. not because there is no pattern there.

Is there some sort of configuration file or something I could look through? I was hoping that there would be some sort of standard setting -- since I haven't customzied anything.

BTW, this is linux (vs unix), but I can't say which flavor.
