UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I have recently installed Solaris 2.8 from CD. The setup program asked me if I wanted developer, server, or workstation support which I probably took the default (not developer). Now, however, I am installing another piece of software that needs /usr/ccs/bin/make which wasn't installed with the options I chose.

How would I install the "developer support" options from CD-ROM?

The quickest way would be to do it over - and pick the option that installs everything.

You could mount the cd and look for the package that would add it, but that is time consuming. SunSolve doesn't show me any 'quick' way.

Check the documentation on the cd's. There may be a way to add additional software after the system is built.

Hmmm. Re-installing the OS seems kind of extreme, no? I'm probably half way through installing the software I want on this box. I have managed to get all my networking, samba, mail, apache, etc. setup. You're suggestion is to re-do everything?

Extreme - not really. I've had times where I didn't pick "all" and then did what you are doing. It got to the point after adding this, and then redoing my application - it needed something else. Add the next forgotten package, go back to reinstalling the applications and .... yes, another package was needed.

By the time you find everything you need or want, the reinstallation of the OS and apps would take less time. That is why I always put everything on now (unless its a DMZ or special application (mail server, ftp, ...). Then those get the default with packages removed from it).
