how to extend words on a command line ?

within a unix window, how do you setup your session to extend a word, by hitting the "esc" key twice.

e.g.

ls -la scri (esc key, esc key)

thankyou

depends of your shell and OS...
HPUX with ksh and set -o vi, Esc Esc
AIX with ksh and set -o vi , Esc \ (backslash)
etc...

export EDITOR=vi
...

But do you have a history file? HISTFILE
standard would be HISTFILE=~HOME/.sh_history

export EDITOR=vi
EDITOR=vi: is not an identifier

HISTFILE is not set as well

Thanks

Argh what OS are we dealing with?
so old sh syntax:
EDITOR=/usr/bin/vi (or wherever it is)
HISTFILE=$HOME/.sh_history
export EDITOR HISTFILE

I've somehow got around this by, changing the shell to ksh, then typing
set -o emacs which now works fine.

Thanks
