Generally, there are two ways to get UNIX or UNIX-like systems:

1. From a hardware vendor like IBM, Sun, Apple, or HP, already loaded on a computer you buy from them.

2. As a software package that you load yourself, generally on PCs of the sort that can run Windows. Nobody (well, almost nobody) uses genuine UNIX for this. The best choice is Linux, which is UNIX-like, but so close to it in how it behaves and how the commands work that if you pick up a general UNIX book it will mostly just apply to Linux. Of course, there are numerous Linux-specific books as well.

For Linux, you need to pick a distribution vendor. For beginners, the best choices are Mandrake or SuSE. Both available from places like CompUSA or Best Buy.

For more info on how to get started with Linux, read my article at www.basepath.com/linux.

Thanks a lot to Marc Rochkind, Killerserv, Colf, binhnx2000, for your time answering my question. I really really appreciated your all big help.

I bought a copy of mandrake 8.2, you all might have a comment or suggestion. its on the way in.

I would still need to ask you all in the future, since I am a new kid on the block in unix.

Here is my plan, I just bought from ebay a Gateway PIII 750, 20 Gig, 128 meg. I plan to instal mandrake 8.2 and hook it up to my four ports hub.

This is my network info: I have an ext. cable modem connected to server, from server(with second nic card) connected to hub, so from the rest of the port of the hub I connected 2 computers, and I will connect the new computer(the gateway) to the last port available on my hub.My OS is the window98SE.

What should I do now ?, is it going to be an OS conflict between Window and Unix ?, and What can I do about it ?

I consider to get a copy from redhat, you all might have a say about this company's product.

again, thank you all very very much.
