Wow! That's $6,825 if you take all the courses (if I calculated correctly). Where is this training to take place? It is at a college/junior college or at a professional training center?

That is quite a bunch of moolah. Do you already have a CS/IT degree or some other degree?

I Had the pricing wrong. Works out to be $4350 if you took the entire program, assuming 1 elective at 645 and the other at 375. I am going to test out of the first two classes (intro and tools). that saves me $1020 bucks. my cost is then $3330.

http://www.kennesaw.edu/coned/courses/cert_unix.htm

yes, have an IT degree already, have another non-IT degree too

required courses are
intro to unix
tools & utilities
sysadmin1
sysadmin2
unix security
unix networking

+ 2 elective courses from the rest of the list above (first post).

Hmmmmmm...

Does the cost of the courses include the final certification costs?

If you have the funds available and don't have to go into debt then I would say go ahead and take the first couple of courses and see how it feels.

I can't speak about Kennesaw, but I wasn't overly impressed with SMU's Unix program. Students that were not ready continued on to the next module and ended up getting the certificate despite their lack of any pratical knowledge of Unix (despite the previous training).

The instructor at SMU was good, though. I can't complain about that but I feel that we were slowed down by students that should have retaken a module to get the understanding that they were paying (or in some cases, the State was paying) the big bucks for.

So, I would take the first two courses and see if I felt I was getting my money's worth. Certification with a pre-existing degree doesn't hurt (especially if it is certification by test).

Any thoughts, guys?

I totatlly agree with what your saying auswipe. i have had some company sponsored training (C) where the entire class was slowed down by a few students in the class. wasnt fun and in the end, we missed the class targets. funding will be on a pay as I go basis, and I should be able to swing it without credit cards or other debt.

the final exam is included in the course i.e. once you complete all courses (and pass each exam) you can take the final at no additional cost.

your aproach to take a class or two and re-evaluate the cert is sound advice.

Do either of these schools offer internet classes? If so is it better to accomplish this via internet or attending classes? I live in Pa and I have been searching for these types of classes but have been unsuccessful to this point.

I will always prefer a face to face instructor. Why? It is easier to ask them questions, diagram problems and just better interfacing with the instructors.

I would prefer to go to classes. That is key. I totally agree with what your saying. I am just looking for something that fits my schedule and or going somewhere within reason of where I live. I guess what makes my quest to find out about getting an HP-UX cert is not knowing enough about it.
