dsl out

i have 5 computers on a network behind a firewall, once in a while my DSL service will get knocked out and will come back in like 20 minutes or so, but during those 20 minutes, i will be able to view my website, but i will not be able to retrieve my mail, nor will be able to ftp or telnet into my server. why is this? i am using the internal ip addresss. one more question, if i try to access the website with the external WAN address from inside my network, i will lose all network activity, internet access, well everything just goes to shit. its not really a problem, i just make sure that samba is always running and to use internal ips. thanks

FORGOT!!! 3 computers are running windows, and the 2 other are running suse linux ummm, 6.4 i think and netbsd latest, the router is a linksys 4 port dsl router with built in firewall, (only requests to ports i open get through) all computers are using the DHCP server in the router, and the linux server is using static ip. the netbsd and the linux servers are connected to the router through a 4 port switch, and the laptop is using a linksys WAP. anymore info needed will be provided.

It may be that your DNS is run on their side so when mail or ftp is invoked a reverse lookup of your server is done and cannot complete - so you don't get anywhere.

yeah my dns is handeld by register.com along with the mx records, but when i ftp to my lin box , or telnet for that matter, i either use the internal ip address (192.168.1.2) or the samba run netbios name, also, when i want to retrieve mail from my windows computer with pop3 it wont work, the mail that i am trying to get has already been delivered to the server, and i can always walk down stairs to the basement to the console to read my mail, but as soon as my dsl connection comes back up everything works fine. i have to say one thing though because i am new to theses boards, the responce time to all posts is great, this website is my new homepage.
oh also, when the dsl does go out, i can still access my webpage with the netbios name or the internal ip, but its everything else that stops working. my webserver is apache my ftp is wuftp. and samba version is latest

Sounds like the web page is cached.

Is it dynamic?
Are you using a proxy server to connect to your website? At the company where I work, the proxy is real bad about caching pages and not checking to see if new pages are available.

The next time it happens, flush your cache and try again.

nope its a static site, and i have flushed the cache to see, as that is what i suspected the first time it happend, also i can still login to my webmin server on port 10000 of the server, and that is all cgi driven.

Well, in that case I have to say that is funky.

Can you run a nmap scan of open ports before and during the blackout to see if any other ports are awake during the outage?

That's really, really strange. I would suspect that something was happening at the ISP that only allows port 80, but if you can connect to port 10,000 then that makes me scratch my noggin' even more.

Can I just check on something.

You have all your systems including your web server behind your linksys router.

You have a (static?) IP address which you have your domain registered to.

Where is your DNS handled for the domain?

This sounds like a routing problem on your linksys box. I am assuming that you have played with the config to get the firwall up to srcatch and enable port forwarding, NAT, etc.

Have you gone through the Firewall logs to see where the requests are going?
