find and replace
I am looking to find and replace a string in a file, can anyone suggest a global find and replace. looked at previous replies on other queries but none seem to address what i am looking for. aint familiar with sed so trying to use ordinary unix commands if possible

sed should easy for this.. Check the below examples..

txt1 is replaced by txt2

Code:
sed 's/txt1/txt2/'             # replaces only 1st instance in a line
sed 's/txt1/txt2/4'            # replaces only 4th instance in a line
sed 's/txt1/txt2/g'            # replaces ALL instances in a line
sed 's/\(.*\)txt1\(.*txt1\)/\1txt2\2/' # replace the next-to-last case
sed 's/\(.*\)txt1/\1txt2/'            # replace only the last case

sed is what you want ;-)

roughly:

sed 's/<string to replace>/<new string>/g'
