Change field separator of grep from : to space
Hi, All,

I wonder how to change the field separator of grep from : to space when use grep to display.

for example when I use

grep -e 'pattern1' -e 'pattern2' -n filename

to find patterns, it use : to separate patterns, but I want to use blank space. is there an option I can set to change it?

Can you please send us the sample input file and desired output.

(Hints Set IFS to " " and then grep.)

No, there is no standard option to change the separator between the line number and the matching line in grep. You can pass the output to sed, though:

grep -e 'pattern1' -e 'pattern2' -n filename | sed 's/:/ /'
