Question Protect a tar file with a password!!
Hi there,

I just want to know if there's anyway to protect any tar file with a password that requierd when somebody want to extract that tar.

That function is not built in to the tar command. But one option is to encrypt the file. Then a separate decryption step will be required before the file can be untarred. And the decryption step will require a password.

The best freeware encryption package for unix is PGP. Also your version of unix may have a crypt command. The crypt command uses 50 year old techniques and it can be broken, but it's better than nothing. PGP is really the way to go.

One word of warning: if you encrypt a file and then lose the password, no one can help you.
