setting date and time
how do i set the system date and time? i know i have to be root to do it but i'm new to unix--really new--and some of this stuff seems really cryptic. thanks for any help.Smilie

Have you tried the search function of this forum...... you'll find a lot of info about this in there.

Also the 'date' man page - will give you a lot of options.

But to help you a little, the function you use is 'date' (This is used for date and time setting).

you need to consider which timezone is appropriate for you..your system is probably set up for you and the default will apply (echo $TZ will show you the timezone your system is using).

date 200206131359.30


This will set your date and time to 2002/06/13 13:15.30 (for the timezone applied).

To change the timezone..... export TZ=GMT+12 (will set your TZ to 12 hours ahead of GMT....). There are also options like NZ, EST etc (see man ctime for details).
