Thank all for your reply. But I am not having trouble with using the tar command as root I can tar from on disk to another whit no problems. I think it is because I'm using a DDS4 tape drive to write to a DDS3 tape. To my understanding this should not matter. But after putting in a DDS4 tape, I was able to tar/write to it. NOTE the DDS3 tape is NOT write protected. I still think that this is not right, beside I hate to trash all my DDS3 tape.

Have you recently upgraded to the DDS4 drive? Have you ever had this problem before?

I seem to recall (and this was years ago) that I couldn't use a 112M 4mm tape in a drive designed for 120M 4mm drive.

Bummer.
