new user, help!

Hello, I have just put on a unix machine for the first time and would like to know the quit command for a proper shutdown. Many thanks

What is the operating system? (You can use uname -a on most to find out)
Check the man page for init, shutdown, reboot.

Solaris - init 0 shuts down the system
init 5 shuts down and power off
init 6 reboot

HP-UX - shutdown (check the man page % man 1m shutdown)
