PROM password for UNIX workstation.

Can someone give me the reason why PROM passwords are put on UNIX machines??? Is there a genuinely good, sane and reasonable decision for this???

On most flavours of Unix, it is possible to boot off of a CD-ROM and gain root access to a system. This is now becoming common knowledge.

The PROM password can be set to restrict operation of certain PROM modes. With a password set, any attempt to do anything other than a standard system boot requires that the password be reentered. The password is remembered after the system is powered off.

So if you ask me i will tell PROM password is genuinely good especially if you wanted all your data's in your server not to be intruded.
