It appears that a reinstall is in order, at least for the C compiler.

Have you considered rebooting again? Sometimes errors will clear with a second reboot. Also, you may need to do fsck on your system. Did you have any dirty filesystems? If you reboot this will happen automagically.

Did all of your services/daemons startup after the reboot? Check to see if everything that should be running is, in fact, running. Check your /sbin/rc#.d directories to see if everything started that should have.

Do you have a backup of your system. That would be a good starting point if the other steps don't work. Please tell me you have a backup. If not, you will most likely need to reinstall. the OS.

Before re-installing anything, I'd go into single user mode and run fsck on all partitions. -mk

easiest first and then progress to the next step.

Yes, I agree that it is the best policy to try all of the easy things first, like rebooting to single and running fsck. And checking the dameons.

That is my basic philosophy of troubleshooting. 1) Easiest, 2) least time consuming and 3) least expensive, in that order.

Then possibly restoring from tape or other backup media.

Lastly, a reinstall would be drastic, but sometimes necessary.

If you are getting no response from the system, the only thing that you can do is reboot. When it gets to the "escape, break out" point that you can go to single user mode, do it. Then try the fsck again.

If you can't get it to come up you may think about breaking out that backup tape. Please tell me you have one! Or else this will be a re-install I fear.
