tape backup size
How can I tell how much tape is left (or how much tape has been used) after doing a backup? My system is on Solaris 5.8.

Only way to even estimate is to compare the size of backup to the published specs of the tape. So if you put 1 GB of data on a DAT rated at 4 GB, you probably have about 75% of the tape left. Don't bet the rent on being able to store exactly 3 more GB though.

Another consideration is compression. Some drives do it through hardware; so 1gb on the disk might only be 250/300mb on the tape.
Also as the tape gets older and used more, bad stops develop and those are skipped, consequently reducing the capacity of the tape.

I have a script which runs overnight to backup a database into a tar file. I then gzip the file and send it off to a tape device. The command I'm using for the tape backup is tar cvf /dev/rmt/0n /var/dbbackup/${FILE}.gz I thought the n meant no rewind so the next file is copied to tape... (4 Replies)
