string test?
hey guys- what is the syntax for a string test to verify that a user has entered a 6 digit numeric?

I'm sorry...I would like to do this in K shell. I need to check to make sure that a user is entering a 6 digit number. I'm new to scripting and can't find what I'm looking for in my books...

Ok, this is probably an inefficient way to do it, but it should work. Other suggestions welcome.

Code:
# force variable to be integer
typeset -i myvar

echo "Enter value: \c"
read myvar

if [[ $myvar -lt 100000 || $myvar -gt 999999 ]]
then
       echo "value invalid"
       exit
fi

Is there a simpler or better way to do this with awk?

you can use the substr function of awk. For more details do a man awk and you will find it.

awk uses only the same pattern matching that can be used by other unix commands. You can use expr:

if expr "$myvar" : "[0-9]\{6,6\}$" ; then
   echo 'exactly six digits'
else
   echo 'not six digits'
fi

and if you want 6 digits starting with non-zero, you could use:
"[1-9][0-9]\{5,5\}$"
