Tape Backup

Can someone please.... help me how to install tape backup

I am using FreeBSD Unix version running on I386 PC box. My IDE tape device is made by HP (Colorado 5GB).

Tape backup

I installed a Tape backup on my Unix Box. And now how can i create tape backup. When i iussed a command df -k i could see the tape device there (/dev/acd0c).

I went to FreeBsD site. But couldn't find what i was looking for. Please help!

Are you sure about that? I normally see /dev/acd0c as the first CD-ROM/DVD in the system.

Here is a snippet from my FreeBSD machine dmesg output:

Oooops...! You are right, it was CD ROM device. Not the tape backup device. :-) forgive me, i am a UNIX dummie here.
But anyway, can you or anyone help me how to create tape backup?
Again, i have installed an IDE tape backup made by HP (Colorado 5G) on my UNIX box. what step(s) i should do to create backup tape.

Please help!!!!!

All part of the learning curve, my man.

First of all, let's see if your OS even recognizes the tape drive.

This is what I normally do, however some of the more experienced admins may have better way (and if you do, please speak up!)

What I normally do is examine the output of `dmesg`:

Execute a `dmesg | more` and read through the kernel messages and look for any references to the tape drive.

How can I tell (from the command line) is compression is turned on for a tape drive? I need to backup a system that is approx 150gb to a tape that has 110gb uncompress but 220gb available compressed. I have a script which runs overnight to backup a database into a tar file. I then gzip the file and send it off to a tape device.
