Question root access on sun os and permissions

Currently have root access to our own boxes on site. HQ wants to take root access away from us.
What does root access provide that is unavailable for users as it is essential for us to keep local control.
We log in as users but have su for special needs.
On all other os boxes we have admin rights as required.
Ideas all welcome.
Please help (oracle and unix newbie)

there are a few programs which need root access but when you run services on a sevrer and you let them connect onhigh ports you can complete manage them yourself.

there are some programs which can give you a bit root access for that program only. You can also set a suid bit on programs so you have root access. when you run them but you are not root.

If you really need root access for anything on that server, it would be a good idea to identify exactly what you need, as soon as possible. Perhaps you can show them that you're prepared to make root-level changes to the system, and they might meet you half way with a program like sudo, which provides extensive logging and flexibility.
