Login Prompt - Sol 10

Hello

When I login as root - my prompt is # I want to change this and I understand the setting (PS1=) needs to go into a file called .profile, but I don't know where this file is for the root user. The root users home folder is / when I type env.

Should I be creating a home folder for the root user and then edit the .profile here?

I'm using Solaris 10

Any suggestions?

Typically, root does not have a home directory on Solaris systems. Other use's home directorys are typically at /export/home (and often automounted to /home). However there is nothing to stop you setting up a home directory for root anywhere you like.

The home directory of each user (root included) is mentioned in the 6th field (: seperated) of the /etc/passwd entry. If the field is empty then "/" is the home directory.

When you are logged in as user root, you can also simply type the command:

cd

without any arguments.

That should put you in the home directory of root.

Lightbulb

this is just a idea so be sure to try it and don't hold me responsible

"create a user with all rights of the root then login as that user and then u can change the PS1"
