Strange Characters in Filename

Hi folks. None of the conventional methods are working for my dilemma:

I have a file in my root directory that has a name comprised of strange characters. When I do an ls, it just hangs at that file until I do a Cntrl-C.

rm ./filename
&
rm \filename
do not work. I am entering the filename by a copy and paste in the Solaris terminal window.

Is there a way to remove the file based on its inode number?
or is there another way?

thanks

ah well

We ended up using find -inum -exec cp to a new filename. We could then remove the file.

Hi Kristy,

The correct way was:

a) ls -i

b) find . -inum "the number in (a)" -exec mv \{\} 'give it a name' \;

Or better yet, use "ls -q". That will show unprintable characters as "?"s, so you can actually use the as wildcards too:
ls -q

rm file???with??nonprinting????????characters

using the autocomplete function for filenames on bash will sometimes work too..... although this probably only of use if the first character is printable......??????
