UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hello again,

under hp-ux i have a file /etc/TIMEZONE. here is definied which timezone i am.
i dont know who reads this file to set after reading the timezone under /usr/lib/tztab.

my 2 questions, who reads the file /etc/TIMEZONE ( which service ) and do i need in the first line to set my shell like #!/sbin/sh ?

1) Who reads the file?
Any process dealing with time, such as the date command, and syslogd.

2) It is not a shell, nor is it something that should ever really need to be set in a script, unless you're doing something wacky. You can simply ignore it, for many purposes (But leave it there!).

If I am incorrect, someone please let me know!

It is read by /etc/profile and no don't add that line.

Livinfree is mostly wrong, but he has a point about syslogd. All programs get the timezone from an environment variable called TZ. For user sessions, TZ is set by the log in scripts. But system daemons, TZ is set by the rc script which runs /etc/rc.config which then reads /etc/TIMEZONE.

So it is read by both /etc/profile and /etc/rc.config.

And still don't add that line.

Might pay to keep in mind that often the /etc/TIMEZONE file is a symbolic link to /etc/default/init file. Just in case you are going to fiddle.....

And no, don't go adding that line!

We are talking HP-UX here, not Sun. On HP-UX, that file is not a symlink.
