Exceed - dial in - CDE

Hi folks. I'm curious to see if anyone has had success using Exceed, through a dial in connection, to access the Solaris CDE?

Thanks,
kristy

Yes many years ago at a company I no longer work for. What specific problems are you having?

I'm posing the question for a coworker, so I'm not dealing with this first hand. He describes the problem as that there is no option to log into the CDE. Once the connection is established, he sees only a CLI (tty?).

We were using exceed to work on a digital unix box. We used the wizard to create a session to grab the CDE once you have your connection. Ours was extremely slow through dialup and we had trouble getting the resolution to work correctly. but it can be done.
Good Luck.

There are two types of dial-in. One would be where there is just a modem hanging off of a 'nix box, where upon dial-up, you are just presented with a terminal type of login. The other is a PPP dial-up connection where you have a network connection over that dial-up. You didn't specify which type of dial-up we are talking about.

If your friend has a PPP connection, which is required, then you can configure XDMP through the xconfig.exe program. Good luck. -mk

Thanks folks for your replies thus far. My associate is using Exceed on his home (Win98) pc to dial into the modem hooked onto our sun box. From what I understand, he selects the phone number to dial from the XDMCP Display Manager. After connection is made, he logs into a tty. Something else interesting happened last night: he reports that he was not able to log in, and was entering key strokes. This morning we observed a file named ¢Bnÿÿÿÿ in our root directory.

Hi Kristy, It is me again,

I hope no one with windows 98 and an AOL adapter would try this at home. This is a little more tricky than it appears.

Using PPP protocle is the correct way, however, you need to configure the the dial up network adapter for an IP connectivity.
This would effectively remove your AOL adapter and allows you to access the CDE.

Now the problem starts when you wish to acces Internet using AOL ( I do not know about other ISPs and their adapter. I can imagine they will have the same problem because one needs to have the IP addresses open for the ISP for random designation and management of clients), as soon as your AOL application loads and you log in (that is if you can log in) you will find that IExplorer can not find any http site and issues an error.

This is when you need to remove all network components and the windows communication component. Then before restart, you need to delete the winsock2 registery from the local machine system key. Then you need to start up AOL with windows 98 CD on. after the AOL loads the data base and adapters then you can restart and access the Internet.

This is what I have been going through.

Thank you,

Yooness
