A Few Tech Questions

Ok, well I am very new to linux, with bugger all experience.

i currently have 2 problems...

1) I have a Western Digital 500gb Sata2 HDD with a NTFS file format on there; but i am getting an error message that says 'file system NFTS is not supported by your system.' Will i have to put a new format on there? Or is there a way that am i able to change that?
(If the need be to format, how can i create a backup of the data that is currently stored on there?)

2) Try as I might, I have been unable to get sound working through my computer, any suggestions would be great!

If anyone would be able to help, that would be much appreciated Smilie

Chearz in advance

You don't specify which version or distribution of Linux you are running. Many newer releases will read NTFS partitions, however the default Linux filesystem in most cases is ext3. You should repartition/reformat your drive using your distribution's default filesystem if you intend to use it as your primary disk.

Sound can be tricky, but many modern distributions get it right out of the box. One of the LiveCD distributions might be a good option for you to try as it does not require you to install anything on the hard drive, and will run completely from CD/DVD. You can see (hear?) if your hardware is supported before committing to an install. Look up Ubuntu as one good example, although there are others.

I am using Ubuntu 7.10 on my system.

And with having to reformat it, how do i create an archive of the hard drive so i dont loose the data I have on it?

Does it currently have a working copy of Windows NT on it?

No, it dosnt; the hard drive only has data on it (movis music games ect). The only operating system that I am using is the Linux on another hard drive

Personally I wouldn't trust Linux to read NTFS for any data I valued, not due to anything wrong with Linux per se, but because NTFS is a Microsoft owned format.

Question

Yes, see that is what caused the problem; I have just recently come over from windows, hence the NTFS formatting on the HDD Smilie
