UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

I want to browse to java.sun.. to download Java JDK

I built openSSL then tried to build lynx to use it by:
./configure --with-ssl

It finds the ssl .h files but cant link, last 3 lines from .configure are:

checking for openssl include directory... yes
checking if we can link to ssl library... no
configure: error: Cannot link with ssl library

Any ideas please?

Are you root when doing this ? What is your OS ? I see that recent versions of lynx come with SSL support enabled by default.

I do not remember (long time since i built ssl ) but there must be an option which tells lynx's configure where your built Openssl installation is something like ssl-dir or --with-ssl=/the/dir/to/ssl, etc ... type './configure --help | more' and read carefully ...

Yes I'm root

I try --with-ssl or --with_ssl=/usr/local/ssl/include , both fail the same way.

Having gone round and round in circles trying to install Lynx+SSL , either from RPM or source, I've found a solution:
- Give up on Lynx
- Download the JDK onto my Windows box
- Upload it to my Linux box using the slow side of my Adsl line

Its not ideal but it does work which is the main thing.

I run configure below:
LDFLAGS="-ldl" ./configure --prefix=/opt/lynx2.8.6 --with-ssl=/opt/openssl-0.9.8j --with-zlib --libdir=/etc
and it's OK!
