.tar.tar files
I downloaded what I thought was a gziped file (at least on remote server it had a .gz extention) and once I had it it was filename.tar.tar..I tried the standard untar tar -xvf filename on it and get an error. Does anyone know what's going on?

Yes, "Internet Explorer" is going on.

Rename the file to put the correct .gz extension on it.

Do I do that on the unix server or on my windows desktop before ftping it to my unix box?

Anywhere. I suggest on the windows box but it makes no difference, it's just a filename.

That did it - got it at least untared...Samba not working but hey its a start- thanks for the quick response.....

you can use:
file filename
to display which types of the file.

gziped file use tar -zxvf or gunzip to decompress
