Question HP Printer

Dear Experts
How can I configure my workstation in order to be able to sent print?
I am working on a sun workstation with Solaris 8 as its OS. My printer is an HP8000 series and is connected somewhere to our network. I know the IP address of the printer and I have put it in /etc/hosts file. So I can ping it.
Shall I define the printer in admintool? I have done it but still I can' print. Do I need to install a special software to make me able to send print? Is it possible to download it ?
Please advise.
Best Regards

You can download HP JetDirect software from www.hp.com - click on drivers and downloads, put jetdirect in the "enter product name or number" search box. Look for your OS in the list.

Pretty easy to set up and use.

Normally .. on my Unix O/S's.. when setting up "remote" printers the process is fairly straight foward. Your printer is connected to the network via a "system" or "print server". The system can be one of many things... HP JetDirect Card that is internal to the HP Printer, an external print server, or even connected to a computer that is acting as a print server.

Your Unix O/S will need to know how to "find" this peice of hardware... This is normally handled in the arp cache. Where you will tell the arp cache the MAC address of the "system" (The MAC address is the serial number) You should be able to do a "man" on "arp" and get information on how to add this entry to your arp cache.

Add the printer to your O/S spooler and enable it and you should be on your way.

How is your printer physically connected to your network?

The printer is physically connected to the network directly through a node. I have Checked the arp -a P but the printert is not there. So how can I introduce it to arp and spooler?. Does the Mask has an important role?
Sorry I am so beginner

I'm not familiar with HP8000 printers. But if they're like LaserJets, they will need their own special software to send the printjob to the printer. If HP doesn't have software for Solaris 8, I guess you could try software for Solaris 7 and hope for the best.

Anyway, don't worry about arp. Once your computer wants to connect to the printer's ip address, it will handle arp automatically if it is needed.

There is no sign of Unix or Solaris there.
It seems Solaris has this ability to communicate with HP printer without installing jetdirect. Is it?
