Yes, in conjunction with the password file which contains the user names and passwords.

Note this has nothing to do with their email addresses.

Can i give them access based on e-mail addresses?
If the only way is using user/pass, how can i do that?

A webbrowser shouldn't automatically start passing your email address to all and sundry, you would have to enter it somewhere. At any rate, how would it know what it was?

Following the documentation at the link I gave you. Set up a password file, then set up the htaccess.
