Is UNIX server being dumped???

Wow, interesting!! Sun Microsystem stock price just got hit hard. What happened? Well, I tell you this, Oracle replaced 3 Unix servers of Intel servers for their cluster application. Why? Because Unix is much harder to learn rather than Linux or NT. So, what is this mean for me? I just got started on my Unix class, and planning to acquire a Unix server for my practices and learning. (Not buying Solaris, but I have connection to our clients for acquiring a Unix) Now, I am confused whether I need to really focus my major on Unix and spend time on it. By the time I acquire the right skills and knowledge, Unix has been dumped by big corporates. It may be true or not. Anyway, I am asking opinions from my fellow subscriber here. Thank you???

9:25AM Sun Microsystems: Unix server mkt threatened (SUNW) 10.69: Merrill Lynch says that recent comments by ORCL's Larry Ellison give cause for concern about SUNW's high-margin Unix server mkt; ORCL is replacing 3 Unix servers running bulk of apps to a cluster of INTC servers running Linux; concern is that SUNW's Unix biz will be attacked from below by INTC servers running NT or Linux (particularly Linux, as it's easier to learn than the Solaris operating system).

It says Linux is easier to learn than Solaris - not UNIX. Linux IS a different flavor of UNIX. Solaris is a different flavor of UNIX. UNIX has been around and will continue to be around. Opinion: Learn as much as you can about UNIX no matter what flavor. Linux would be a good start but don't just learn one and nothing else. I've worked on HPUX, Digital's UNIX (before TRUnix), AIX, Solaris, BSD,...each is different from the rest.

And I hope you aren't going to invest money the same way - don't get scared just because of one report. Linux is getting better and better and it will replace Solaris servers - but not all of them. It will probably be more of a hurt on Mr. Gates than anyone else.

Folks still run VMS systems which were suppose to be dead and gone at the time I started in all of this (I started on Digital VAX/VMS). Same as COBOL.

LINUX is UNIX. UNIX is an OS philosophy, independent of the hardware. SUN SPARC is a hardware architecture and is NOT UNIX.

And YES, the world trusts AMD and INTEL architecture very much.. .they should.... it is fine and runs great and is very cost effective. Load of very large and credible organizations run UNIX on Intel because of how cost effective Intel is. Intel makes a great microprocessor. UNIX is UNIX regardless of the underlying silicon.
