Getting the thing installed on a machine, with a user account and a connection to the internet or on a LAN is usually a good start. From there it depends what you want to do with it.

My first introduction to UNIX was with SunOS on a 68020 writing C programs. Next it was porting an OS/2 application to AIX. My first linux was Slackware with a 1.2.13 kernel and getting it to run on an 386sx box with 4meg of memory and an ethernet connection.

So development, admin, installation, networking, etc. My first personal programming project for UNIX was a text editor, which I still use in all environments.
