Pro's and cons for Linux

Hi there thanks for checking in

The I T manager over here wants us to convert 1 branch in our company from Win98 to Linux

I would just like to know the types of problems that we will have once this is done.

I would also like to know the following.

Does Linux come with a Office package or can you download or do you have to pay for it.
( Office - something like MS word, Excel etc... )

Does Linux come with it's own Mail program or can you download or do you have to pay for it.
( mail program - something like Outlook Express )

What happens if somebody mails you a doc from Win98 would you still be able to read if on the Linux PC.

Thanks in advance.

Bold move, have you had anyone resouce this? It's not exactly a small task.

One I can think of is re-educating everyone to a new platform.

There's StarOffice with is very similar to the MS Office applications.
Haven't used it myself just yet.

Sorry, know little in that regard.

Best of luck to you though. Smilie

Linux has excellent mail and office automation programs.

Email works independent of the operating system because the underlying technologies are based on a common set of standards specified in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IEFT). Examples include TCP/IP, SMTP, MIME.

The graphical user interface for Windows based systems are excellent and many users love Windows.

The Linux kernel is extremely robust and flexible.

An example of a nice graphical interface over a UNIX kernel is MAC OS X. If you want to have the reliability of a UNIX kernel and the slick graphics that *you pay for* and easily integration with Microsoft office products I suggest you look at MAC OS X.

However, MAC OS X is NOT FREE... the kernel is free, but you pay big bucks for the right to use the super-duper graphics and plug-and-play application environment.
