hi! what books do you recommend for someone like me who has no experience with unix?

If they have "no experience" I would humbly suggest that they're a user, rather than any of the above. Smilie

Apropos the original question I would give a qualified recommendation to Teach Yourself UNIX in a Week by Dave Taylor Sams Publishing. It's old and huge, but it's also very inexpensive and does cover the basics.
