UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Happy Holidays everybody.
I successfully installed linux 7.1 on my desktop. At first I couldn't get Xwindow to start. Kept getting error message: "depth 16 not supported". So I reinstalled and made it 8 bit color depth with 1024 x 786 resolution, and Xwindow started this time around but everything on the screen is ridiculously huge. I did 'Xtest' and it showed resolution at some low number like 330 x 320 or somewhere around there. I tried to fix it several times using 'xf86config' and 'Xconfigurator' but it always goes back to the lower resolution which makes everything too large. I even tried to reinstall it again and I believe I input all the correct information about my PC, and it still came up all messed up. Could someone help me on this? I would appreciate it very much.

What video card do you have? I had a problem once with a cheap on-board setup that would ONLY run with Windows... Same things happened to me.

By Linux 7.1, I assume you mean Redhat or a derivitave... Type Xconfigurator in text mode - it'll save you the trouble of re-installing every time you want to try a new X setting. Then it starts up Xtest for you, and you can choose to go back to Xconfigurator.

Thank you for your advice. It was the video card that was presenting the problems. I went and got RH 7.2 to install and it works perfectly now. But the problem now is the I can't get Oracle CD to run in Xwindow. I thought it would make things easier kind of like MS windows. But I think the problem is that the oracle program i have is made for MS windows platforms. I thought there was a feature in Xwindow that lets you run programs from other OS's on linux. Am I wrong?

It should be able to mount the CD, and read from it, but I doubt you'll find anything that will run Windows Oracle Personal... There are programs (Like WINE) that will allow you to run a few simple Windows applications, but Oracle is too complex for that...

Sign up for a free account at http://www.oracle.com, and I think you can simply download (assuming you have a lot of free time, and maybe a CD Burner - not sure what you need) Oracle personal Linux version..

Or simply use the database programs bundled with Redhat. You should have a few, including PostGreSQL and MySQL on your installation disks...
