Stripping a portion of string from behind!!!
Hi,

How to strip a portion of a file name from behind...Say for Eg..i have a file name like aaaaa.bbbbb.Mar-17-2007

i want to remove .Mar-17-2007...is there a one line command which can give this output...

$ echo ${x%.*}
aaaaa.bbbbb

I want a command to remove any thing like characters,numerals,special characters from the end of a file...

Can anybody help me out??? Can a CUT command do this....I need a one line command so that i can redirect it output to a file too...

The cut/awk also be used

Using cut

Original contents of /tmp/a
aaaaa.bbbbb.Mar-17-2007
aaaaa.bbbbb.Mar-17-2007

cut -d'.' -f1,2 </tmp/a
Output:
aaaaa.bbbbb
aaaaa.bbbbb

You can also redirect the ouptut to a file.Hope this may help you.

Can you use xargs?

I will point out that echo can be redirected to a file. *shrug*
