It creates a special file for holding other files data and metadata - so the file inside the archive can be restored. It's the basis for tape backup and restore.

Reading the man page for tar is a waste of time unless you already know how to use tar a little bit. It's unfortunate.
try something like this tutorial -

Hi folks,
I downloaded an Oracle Agent that was packaged in .zip format.

My question is, will the TAR command be useful in extracting this, or do I need to rename the extension from . zip to .tar?

When I do a tar tvf I get a checksum error.
Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

HP-UX 9000/800

oracle@prod:/prod01/agent10g # tar tvf oracle_agent.zip
directory checksum error
oracle@prod:/prod01/agent10g #

try either 'unzip' or 'gunzip' or 'gzip -d'
