Question Cde

Is there such a thing as installing a CDE for use with UNIX? If so, where would I find one, and how would I do it? What kind of info about UNIX would I need to know before going into this?

CDE

When you say a CDE are you referring to THE Common Desktop Environment? Please be more specific in regards to what you mean and what platform you're referring to, so it will be easier to answer your question.Smilie

Yes, looking for info on the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). Am using Hummingbird Neighborhood with HP-UX. I keep reading about CDE's but I can't get beyond a telnet window. I've been searching all over for any CDE reference within the app. but I can't find one. Can a KDE be applied? www.KDE.com posted the beta 3.0 version in Dec. But I would think that it would only be avail to Linux users.

This is something that you should address with your Unix administrator. It may already be installed / running, and you simply need to know how to connect to it. It's also likely that he disabled it's use - our production servers at work do not allow incoming connections for Xwindows, because at a certain point, it will significantly impact performance.

As far as what you can install, you are most likely going to see VUE / CDE on HP-UX servers (depending on the version), although Gnome is being ported over - I believe to eventually replace CDE altogether.
