UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Hi,

I know that there should be a FTP server in Windows or a FTP listener daemon running in windows. Iam a beginner. May I know, what setup need to be done on Windows/unix end so that, a file can be transferred using sftp/scp from unix to windows.

broadly, you will need to make sure an ftp server is installed on the unix machine, and that it is running, and that an ftp account is set up. Then you can just use the ftp client which is installed in windows (or install a graphical ftp client) to log on remotely to the unix machine, using the computer name or ip address of the unix machine.

It depends on which way you want to go.

To ftp FROM unix TO windows, you need the warftp server program running on the windows machine. Do a Google search for it, and download it. It works well though it is a little confusing to set up at first. Just remember that you must create a user within warftp in order to get into your Windows machine... warftp does not use your windows user name. Although you could, of course, set it up to use the same character string as your windows user name.

To ftp FROM windows TO unix, you can go to the command window in windows and ftp to UNIX pretty easily. No extra software is required. Although it is probably best to do a Google search for a nice graphical ftp program for Windows. You can use CuteFTP or a number of other choices.
