To yank lines you must first type the double quote character ", then you must specify a named buffer. Then you specify the number of lines to cut. Then you type yy.

So, to yank 4 lines from source_file into named buffer a, position the cursor to the beginning of the text to yank, then type

"a4yy (that's double quote a 4 yy)

Then <CTRL>6 to dest_file and position the cursor where you want to paste the text and type

"ap

This will paste the lines. The double quote should be used before the word and character yanks also.

Pasting text in VI editor from a different editor
