cron entry

Hi,
Where can we find Cron job logs?i have a cron job which is not executing at all,
00 12 * * * /xx/yy/job > /pp/qq/log
if i execute the job alone,it is executing fine.
>/xx/yy/job > /pp/qq/log (is executing fine)

but its not executing when it triggered from cron.is there any place cron sends logs to check for errors.

Thanks.

I dont think there will be a a seperate log entry for cron job if you want you have to give it in the job scheduled ....

Thanks,
Arun.

the log which has given in job scheduled is throwing 0 bytes file.but when it runs manaully the log is updating appropraite.

Probably your cron job is running.

However it fails.

A cron runs with a very limited PATH.
Depending on whether it is a root or ordinary user cron job the PATH is simething like:

root: PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
ordinary user: /usr/bin

When you execute a command on a shell prompt you usually have a much bigger PATH

So, if your script uses a command which is not located in /usr/bin (and /usr/sbin) the command will fail and therefore the cronjob.

That way it seems is if the cron never ran.

Therefore, to avoid this define PATH at the start for your script.

Since you do not redirect standard error, but only standard out, you never see anything indicating your cronjob went wrong.

You can check the cron log to see if the cronjob actually started.

This kinda proves the assumption in my previous post is correct.

Directly at the start, the file is created since you redirect standard out.

But the cron job never reaches the point where it starts to produce data cause it failed on a command which it could not locate.

all the other jobs in the cron are running fine, except this job.

Try this instead:

00 12 * * * /xx/yy/job > /pp/qq/log 2>/pp/qq/log.err

To see if any errors are being generated. Also make absolutely sure that the path /xx/yy/job is correct as the full path name must be used inside the crontab!
