misinformed??[awk and sed]

I have recently read in a Perl tutorial, that Perl can do anything that awk and/or sed can do and more. In fact it goes on to say that Perl was originally written by a systems admin who felt that he needed a new language to perform his administrative tasks easier and more efficiently.

Is this true, and if it is why even bother with awk/sed. Why not j just learn Perl?

From what I've seen that is the case. I haven't personally seen PERL not able to do anything sed and awk can do.

As for why bother with awk and sed, they are basically stantard commands on UNIX, where PERL is an interpreter that is usually not found on a standard UNIX box. It must be installed on the system you want to run it on. Also, If someone needs to do a quick awk or sed, they can do it from a command line rather than writing a perl script just to do a simple extraction of a field for example.

Where did you get the Perl tutorial?

I am looking for a good one. Can you post it here?

The O'Reilly book "Learning Perl" is a good one IMO. Smilie

Not to be mistaken for "Programming Perl" or "Perl Cookbook". These two books are more for reference.

Good Perl Book

For learning Perl I really liked "Mastering Perl 5" by Eric C. Herrmann. It covers Perl development on both Win32 and *Nix platforms.

The real plus is that I got this book for a whoppin' $5 at the local 75% Off Books (in Plano, Texas).

I normally use Perl for more involved routines and awk and sed for more "Quick and Dirty" bits.

Yes, I agree. If any of you folks live in the DFW (Dallas/Ft. Worth) area as I do. "75% off Books" is a great store to buy any book for $5 or less even $50 or $60 computer books.

My basic Unix book does not include much info about the awk and sed commands, but i see now how they may be useful. Thanks for the replies.

As far as the Perl tute goes, you can find it by doing a search at Google with this string:
'Roberts Perl Tutorial'

I don't know if it is good or not, because i chose to learn Python instead, so i only completed about 1/4 of it and then moved on. It does appear extensive.

Was written for windows machines, but the exercises seem to work well on Linux.
