Free Shell Accounts

Hello gurus,

I am a novice to Unix and would like to practice learning commands. Is there a way to download a program onto my PC at home and practice.

Install cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com/). It includes Linux shell and utilities implemented on Windows. But my impression is, being not a real Unix environment, it may not substitute a real Unix installation.

Or install a virtual machine such as VMWare and load a Linux/BSD/whatever image directly in it.

Maybe these will help too:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/int.../sfu35int.mspx

A google got most of these out fairly easily.

There are various live Linux CDs that might work for you. Knoppix is one http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Using a Linux live CD is indeed a good plan, you can use Ubuntu for example or you can install a complete Linux distro in a dual boot situation on your machine so you both on your computer.

You can also use a free shell account somewhere on a server. Please refer to this website to find a host you like to use.
