I am trying to install Solaris 7 on my PC (new hard disk with no software on it and having no other hard drives. I am using Solaris device donfiguration assistant and the Solaris CD. I have tried to install the software by taking the interactive installation option. I have no knowledge of unix file system. Still, i had created the /, /usr, /export/home & /bin file systems. Before actually installing the software, it had asked me to select from Auto or Manual booting. I had selected the Auto boot option. On my screen, i was able to see that it had started the installation. After some time, it tried to boot on its own and threw a message on my screen. The message text is
Missing partition boot record.
If anyone knows about this problem or the actual installation process, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.
Venkat.

You need to boot from your install CD. Insert the Solaris Software CD in your CDROM drive. If your CDROM drive/bios isn't bootable, first insert the "Device Configuration Assistant" (DCA) diskette. At the "Boot Solaris" menu, choose "CD."

At the "Type of Installation: Interactive or Jumpstart" menu, type "b -s"

Or, after the video configuration, network, time and date you'll notice one of the menu's has a button: [Exit] Select Exit and, when it asks you again "do you want to exit?," just say yes.

Once you're at the UNIX root prompt #, you can mount the boot drive with "mount /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 /mnt"" and view anything wrong with the boot drive

I am not sure about this will work. Since you are playing with new system(no important data to lost) you can test this.

Why don't you visit sun website they have a huge collection of documentation about Solris 7.

http://docs.sun.com and select 'All Solaris version'.

or you can wait for another post by someone else....
