raw disk

What do u mean by raw and cooked disk? What are the advantages of having raw disk?

With raw i/o you are accessing the disk driver directly. With cooked i/o you are asking the OS to do more work. A very over-simplified example... You have a CD. To make an ISO copy of the CD, you would need raw i/o. But if you want a directory listing of the files, you would need cooked i/o.
