I'm so lost...

Fair warning... I know nothing of Unix. That's why I joined this forum and I need your feedback desperatly. Here is the situation...

I built an app using ASP and Northcode's SWF Studio v3 for a cd launcher tool for a client that develops software. They like the app and it works well on Windows-based environments as scoped. No problems there.

However, this customer produces software that also runs on Unix. They would like my app to be used within their Unix environment too. SWF Studio does not run on Unix. There is nothing any of us can do about that (I don't think).

But, they may be able to create the environment on a windows platform, move the results of that effort to the Unix machine where they can dump the Unix-based software into the correct directories. NOW here is the problem. How do I create an autorun for the cd for Unix? This autorun should locate a .swf file. I have searched high and low for information on creating an autorun file for Unix systems and I can't get a "leg up" anywhere.

Anyone. Anyone? Thanks in advance.

There is no standard "autorun" on Unix. With certain desktops (KDE, GNOME etc.) there may be utilities which simulate this functionality by running in the background and polling the CD/DVD/whatever drive, but usually these are installed separately so most people's desktops will not come with this sort of utilities, and will not work on those machines.

The closest you'll get to autorun will be an obviously-titled script file that people need to run, and instructions printed on the CD on what to run. Users of a UNIX OS shouldn't have much problem with that, theoretically.

Interested, but lost.

Alright, so I'm interested in using Unix, but I have a couple of pretty basic questions: 1) What's the relationship between Linux and Unix? Are they one and the same, or completely different? 2) Can you use Unix on a laptop? and 3) Where can you get Unix? Thanks for listening. (9 Replies)
