Question Is Unix for me?
Great forum and great idea! I just became a member and already I am learning about UNIX. I just checked out the FAQ's about good books, but the discussion was only covering programming. This raising a question, though! Will I need programming skills to be good at UNIX?

Currently, I am a Systems Admin for Windows and MAC's. At this point, I only desire to be a UNIX SYS admin or maybe a Net admin for UNIX. I have little to no background in programming just for the info. I did buy the UNIX sys admin handbook, but I feel lost. I guess that's why I'm questioning myself. I got as far as installing FreeBSD, but had no idea how to connect to the network. I really want to learn the UNIX world as I have heard so much about it. I also am tired of Windows and want more challenges. Someone said to buy the dummy UNIX book and I will. Can someone my speed handle UNIX? If so, can you name some good beginning books? Does Rich Stevens write beginner books? Thanks.

Hi,

"Can someone my speed handle UNIX?" well that is up to you if you can handle it. I'm sure you asked the same question when you first used Windows or any other O/S. They are just a matter of learning and knowing how it works. 4 months ago I hardly touched a Linux/Unix box. Now they are the main computers that I use at work, only reason I use windows is for the net and e-mails.
I can't program free hand. I have learnt how to script and do some basic programming in my time. You can't help but to have to learn to pick it up. It's not to hard just look for examples and move from there if your having problems.
Don't give up on it though, if you think UNIX is to hard to start with try Linux. That is pretty easy to use and learn, then when you think you can tackle Unix go for it. There's not to much difference between them in the basic base line commands.

Even if you're only interested in UNIX system administration,
there's a WHOLE LOT for you to learn and do Smilie

OK. Thanks for the feedback merlin & rwb1959. One thing is for sure. You can never waste money buying books.

Okee problems...!!
