man nawk
Code:
NAME
nawk - pattern scanning and processing language

SYNOPSIS
     /usr/bin/nawk [ -F ERE ] [ -v assignment ] 'program' |
     -f progfile ... [ argument ... ]

-v assignment is simply assigning variables values via command line arguments.

'program' is an awk procedure, which, in my case, I am using the "BEGIN" action so that external input isn't needed (i.e. from a file)

print val_a / val_b should be self explanitory.

vgersh99's solution is equally fine, read the bc man page as he suggests as well.
